thanks rick. though both "seattle" and "writers" are a bit of a stretch for me, i am anxious and willing (if easily distracted) when it comes to increasing interesting interactions. ooooh, that was somewhat alliterative!
lance, nice to meet you. are we gonna post bits here to share?

Mon, September 20, 2004 - 10:49 AMHey Shu, anyone who can correctly use the word alliterative is definitely a writer! The twitchy ooooh works too. -

Writers?
Sun, September 26, 2004 - 8:24 PMFor a writers club, I think Shu has a good idea....we should post some writing. Of course once you post it - you lose some ownership or maybe you believe an author looses it all to the reader?
I don't live in Seattle, but I am closer than I used to be -

ownership...
Sun, September 26, 2004 - 9:18 PMwell, practically speaking: once you publish it, even if only online, you prove ownership at a place in time (if that is what matters) even if you haven't formally copyrighted the piece.
then, spiritually speaking: i don't think i lose anything to a reader. i write what i write because for some reason i need to say it. if i never receive any feedback, i haven't gained what i often hope to gain, but i certainly haven't lost anything.
but having been raised on fairness, after i show you mine, i always hope you'll show me yours...
peace,
shu

Re: ownership...
Tue, September 28, 2004 - 3:29 PMYep, on the copyright issue, that's my understanding as well: there isn't too much to worry about with regard to posting things back and forth to one another, and in fact posting it establishes copyright. Just as you said, Shu. However, owning copyright and enforcing it are two different things. If someone uses your work without your permission, getting compensation or getting them to stop involves negotiations, threats, and possibly lawyers. So it is with all intellectual property.
On the spiritual thread, I have a poet friend who doesn't like to answer questions about her poetry. As far as she's concerned, what she meant or what she was feeling when she wrote it doesn't matter. Once released into the wild the work has a life of its own and all that matters is a reader's relationship with it, not hers.

Bingo
Tue, September 28, 2004 - 8:54 PMYes on an intellectual level was what i was tlaking about. And really as an author - you can't stop people from interepreting your work as tehy see it. frustrating at times - but I also don't think that a poem has only one meaning - the author's - once writing has been published, intellectually, the author has no control. They can provide the background for which they meant it, but it becomes a personalized part of the reader. As far as creative writing goes...

critiques?
Tue, September 28, 2004 - 3:35 PMI'd be up for posting our work for critique. I also like live critiques. Some combination is probably best, live for instantaneous, gut-level feedback, on line for more considered and deliberate ideas. I'll start posting some of my stuff here.
